CNN Travel has curated a list of 24 destinations that are still largely undiscovered or overlooked but are worth considering for travel plans in 2024. These places offer unique experiences, prioritize sustainability, and make it easier for tourists to visit.


Sumba, Indonesia

For travelers looking for a beach destination that emphasizes community consciousness and sustainability, Sumba Island in Indonesia is ideal. It is a remote island with untouched forests, remote villages, ancient rituals, and world-class surf breaks. Sumba is twice the size of Bali and has welcomed several new luxury eco-resorts like The Sanubari and Cap Karoso.

Turkey’s Black Sea coast

Less known than Turkey’s popular Turquoise Coast resorts, the Black Sea region offers a different side of the country. It has historic towns, villages, beautiful beaches, and adrenaline-inducing activities. Tartu, Estonia

Tartu, in southern Estonia, has been named a European Capital of Culture for 2024. This intellectual city is known for its oldest university, Estonian National Museum, and Science Centre AHHAA. The Old Town of Tartu and the riverside neighborhood of Supilinn are worth exploring for their historic charm and transformation into desirable areas.

Tainan, Taiwan

Celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2024, Tainan has become a popular hotspot in Taiwan. Known for its thriving street food scene, Tainan offers a taste of local cuisine, natural landscapes like Tsao Shan Moon World and salt farms, colorful old temples, and cool new museums. It has also been recognized as one of’s top sustainable tourism destinations in 2023.
