Box Office: 'Argylle' Beats 'Lisa Frankenstein' in Slowest Super Bowl Weekend of All Time

The spy thriller 'Argylle' outperformed 'Lisa Frankenstein' in a lackluster box office weekend, with both films struggling to gain traction.

Spy Thriller 'Argylle' Claims the Top Spot

Matthew Vaughn's 'Argylle' maintained its position as the number one film at the box office, earning $6.5 million from 3,605 North American venues. However, this marked a steep 62% decline from its disappointing debut. The big-budget caper has generated $28.8 million domestically and a disappointing $60 million globally after two weeks of release. With a production cost of $200 million, 'Argylle' has become the year's first major box office bomb.

Horror-Comedy Film 'Lisa Frankenstein' Flops

Newcomer 'Lisa Frankenstein' had a terrible start, earning only $3.8 million from 3,144 venues. Focus Features, the studio behind the film, spent $13 million to produce it, which may help mitigate the box office shortcomings. However, the movie failed to resonate with both critics and audiences, with a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 'B' CinemaScore. 'Lisa Frankenstein' was written by Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams in her feature debut.

Super Bowl Weekend Leads to Slow Box Office Sales

As expected, the Super Bowl weekend resulted in sluggish ticket sales. With approximately $42 million in total revenue, this was the slowest weekend in box office history for this particular event. Previous years before the pandemic saw revenues of $84 million and $75 million in 2020 and 2019, respectively. The lowest-grossing weekend of 2024 so far, it is clear that moviegoing is not yet back to its pre-pandemic levels.

Industry experts are hoping for an improvement in ticket sales when highly anticipated films like 'Madame Web' and the Bob Marley biopic 'One Love' release on February 14. However, the real boost is expected to come with the debut of 'Dune: Part II' in March. Until then, ticket sales are down nearly 15% compared to the same period in 2023.
